What it works out

Factory cycles - how many runs of each schematic the quantity you asked for actually needs, all the way down the chain.
Make or buy, per material - for every input it compares the cost of producing it against its market price, and takes the cheaper one.
A shopping list of what is left to buy, and what the whole run is worth against the sell price of the finished product.

What it does not know

Extraction is not modelled: raw materials enter the calculation at their market price, because that is the number you can check. If you pull them from your own planets they cost you time and a command centre instead, and the real margin is better than what you see here.

Nor is hauling. Every price comes from one market, and moving P1 across a few jumps is often the difference between a run that pays and one that does not.
